Emilija Škarnulytė - Folkestone Triennial 2025

Filmed and edited by Oliver Parkin, including excerpts from Emilija Škarnulytė’s film.

For the 2025 Folkestone Triennial 2025, Lithuanian artist and filmmaker Emilija Škarnulytė presented Burial, an immersive film and sculptural installation shown inside the Quarterhouse auditorium in Folkestone.

The work explores a central question: what traces of our civilisation will remain far into the future? Through film, sculpture, and spatial installation, Škarnulytė connects the fossil-rich geology of Folkestone with sites of nuclear history and environmental transformation. The film moves between ancient tombs, submerged ruins, and the decommissioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant—often described as a twin of Chernobyl—examining humanity's attempts to contain radioactive legacies that will outlast generations.
